An explanation of NetSafe’s work with RIANZ following the new copyright Amendment Act to give schools some room to deal with infringements happening on their networks I love awards ceremonies. I can’t get enough of them. Tony’s, Aria’s Bafta’s, MTV EMA’s, Golden Globes, Tui’s, love them all. Love them so much I named one of my children Oscar. Let’s get this confession out right at the start: I’m a journalist. And here’s my cathartic reaction to the closure of a major British tabloid newspaper and the need to build a new generation of well equipped digital citizens A new year brings new opportunities for good things to happen and for bad guys to profit A quiet lunchtime read turns into a warning about the rapid pace of widespread technological change. Luddites beware! A few weeks ago NetSafe attended CORE Education’s annual conference for educators, Ulearn 09, held down in Christchurch. Being born into the digital age isn’t necessarily enough to make one a digital native. But people (both young and old) will increasingly require a range of skills to participate digitally. These skills need to be taught and supported and require quality internet access. Sage advice from my dad on how regular communication is critical to a healthy relationship. Timely as at NetSafe we’re embracing web 2.0 as a way to communicate with you about where we’re at now – and after ULearn09 we’re thinking many people probably don’t know our current position on promoting the benefits of the net, challenging protectionist policy, and on championing the theory and practice of digital citizenship. So pull up a chair and lets have a deep and meaningful… Is cybercitizenship affected by teachers’ and schools’ confidence that they can rise to the challenge? Thoughts from day 2 at ULearn09. |
